Make 2019 YOUR Year

I find it fascinating that countless people mark January 1st as the day for new beginnings. But, let’s think about that for one second. Can’t any day serve as the opportunity for new beginnings? I understand that January 1st can act as the catalyst for change. And yes, if that is what it takes for someone to think about change then they are definitely moving in the right direction. However, here is some food for thought surrounding the first day of any given year. Research reminds us that less than 25 percent of people actually stay committed to their resolutions…

Fundraiser for Men's Camping Trip

My friend, Tommy Laplante, identified a need in the community, and created a program to match that need. Tommy understands the value of land-based healing, and will be taking men camping and fishing. This initiative is taking place through the Saskatoon Indian & Metis Friendship Centre. The purpose of this outing is to promote comradery and leadership development for this group of men that frequent their facility. Considering that Saskatoon has some of the highest HIV rates in the country, campers will also receive education on HIV and addiction. There in no funding for this program and this is where…

Perspective is Everything. What Do You See?

What do you see when you look at this image? When I show this to an audience, many reply with the same automatic response: A black dot. I then attempt to make a joke and say something like, “If you see a clown’s face we need to talk.” But why is it that the majority of individuals focus their attention on the black dot opposed to all of the white surrounding it? Think about the media for a moment. The media tends to focus primarily on this black dot, and reports the world through a dark lens. Stories are discussed…

How Do You Respond to Life's Challenges?

What would you do if you woke up in a room that was completely dark? I mean the type of darkness where you can’t even see your own hand in front of your face. Do you sit there motionless? Do you scream for help? Or, do you get up and search for a way out? I believe that your response is a reflection of how you react when life throws you a challenge. When life knocks you down, do you sit there like a victim stating, “life is not fair” or “why me?” Or, do you use your voice in…

Stop Giving Your Power Away for Free

Have you ever prayed for someone to be sick or absent from your place of work, classroom, or even family function? If your prayers were answered you likely thanked God for this incredible gift, and finally felt as though you were able to truly enjoy your day. Unfortunately, their absence will be short-lived, and in no time you will once again have to deal with them. Their very presence might even have the ability to overshadow any good throughout your day. You likely blame them for your bad day, and like a swift moving poison, your frustration and anger spills…

Are You Existing or Are You Living?

I believe that there are two types of people in this world. There are those who exist, and then there are those who live. Which one are you? To exist is easy. It is like being on autopilot where every day tends to repeat itself. In this state, you do not step outside of your comfort zone, you do not take risks, and therefore you do not grow. People who exist are more likely to stay in the same unhealthy relationship, go to the same job they dread, and simply serve their time in the game of life. To live,…
