Stories Shatter Stigma

While we are certainly moving in the right direction with mental health, stigma remains evident in our places of work and communities. Learning about various mental health issues from a book or a workshop is a great start, but do you know what’s even better? Hearing someone’s story. The number one way to remove stigma is by sharing our stories.   Many of us are good at wearing a mask and pretending that we have it all together. I get it. It’s difficult to be vulnerable and share our inner battles with those around us. However, this is an…

A Male Teacher Speaks Openly About Mental Illness

Few males can be found teaching elementary school, and even fewer of these speak openly about their challenges with mental health. Meet my best friend, James Siemens. Living in a small prairie town makes it even more difficult to speak about mental illness. While James often felt alone in his battles, he quickly learned that by being vulnerable and sharing his story, there were others in hiding. That right there is why we made this book. It’s time to talk alright.

Men and Suicide: It's Time to Talk

Lately, I’ve received a lot of messages from men who are really struggling, and I have a very legitimate fear that as we continue to navigate through COVID-19 we are going to see an increase in male suicides over the next few months. Men, we are dying by suicide at a rate that is three times higher than women. Why? Well let’s look at some of the headlines out there. Women seek help. Men die.   I get it, asking for help doesn’t come naturally for us. I have stood at the fork in the road. I flirted with…

Healing Words from the Former Humboldt Broncos Assistant Coach

I don’t know about you, but I found it really difficult to examine my pain. It was easier to project my pain onto others, turn to alcohol in an attempt to escape it, or immerse myself into work. Healing is work.   Chris Beaudry reminds us of this truth. Now, it’s impossible to comprehend what Chris pulled up to that fateful April evening, and what transpired over the following days. But what is evident is that in order for Chris to heal, he had to go through the middle of his pain. The following video explains not only what he saw as…

Rewriting the Scripts of Men and Mental Health

My travels recently took me to a small rural community. Here, I was asked to deliver a motivational message to the countless volunteers who tirelessly gave their time to assist others. I was welcomed with open arms and embraced with the warm hospitality that only a small tight-knit community can offer. In my message I made a point of saying that as volunteers, it is essential to also take care of their own needs. I spoke briefly about my own challenges with mental health, and stated that it was not a weakness to ask for help in times of need.…

How Michael Landsberg's Single Act Saved One Man from Suicide

I think that we often underestimate the impact we can have on the people around us. Clearly mental illness effects both men and women. However, men are less likely to seek help. This was one of the motivating factors for me to begin the process of writing a book by men for men. This book features countless stories of Saskatchewan men who are proud to put a voice and face to various issues of mental wellness. I want to share one of these stories with you. Tyson Williams picked a specific day to die by suicide. On that day,…
